The community in the Bronx is mourning the tragic loss of 21-year-old Justin Chatfield, who was fatally shot on April 2, 2026, in a shocking incident inside his apartment building.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred at River Park Towers in the Morris Heights neighborhood following a dispute between Chatfield and his 76-year-old neighbor, Gilbert Smalls. Law enforcement sources say the two had argued through a shared wall over loud music shortly before the violence unfolded.
Investigators allege that Smalls armed himself with a handgun and opened fire as Chatfield stepped out of his apartment. After being shot, Chatfield reportedly staggered back inside, where he collapsed in his mother’s arms. He was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Police, responding to earlier 911 calls about gunfire, arrived at the scene where Smalls allegedly confessed to the shooting and directed officers to the weapon. He has since been arrested and charged with murder and illegal gun possession, and is being held without bail.
Those who knew Justin describe him as a young man working toward a better future. He was reportedly preparing to become a father, expecting a child with his longtime girlfriend, and was pursuing opportunities through trade school while seeking stable work.
His sudden and violent death has left family, friends, and neighbors in deep grief. A memorial has been set up outside the building as the community struggles to process the loss of a life taken far too soon.
As the investigation continues, loved ones remember Justin Chatfield not for the circumstances of his death, but for the life he was building and the future that was ahead of him. May he rest in peace.
