Nacho and Monica Pedroza Death, Obituary: Devoted Grandparents Dead in DUI Crash That Sent Jeep Into Sweetwater River in National City, California
NATIONAL CITY, California — The community is mourning the tragic loss of Nacho Pedroza, 60, and Monica Pedroza, 53, a devoted couple who were killed when a suspected DUI driver rear-ended their Jeep, sending it into the Sweetwater River.
According to authorities, the crash occurred just after midnight along State Route 54 near the Interstate 5 bridge. Prosecutors say the couple was heading home—just minutes away—after spending time at a casino when their vehicle was struck from behind by a driver later identified as Douglas Guyton.

The impact forced the couple’s Jeep off the bridge and into the river below. Emergency responders worked quickly to the victims. Monica Pedroza was pulled from the water and brought to shore, but despite life-saving efforts, she could not be revived. Nacho Pedroza was pronounced dead after the vehicle was recovered from the river.
Prosecutors allege the suspect was driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol level more than twice the legal limit. He now faces DUI charges and two counts of second-degree murder. Officials also confirmed he has three prior DUI convictions.
The loss has left the Pedroza family devastated. Their son described the grief as overwhelming, saying it feels like a nightmare. Family members are now calling for justice and plan to remain present throughout the legal proceedings.
Nacho and Monica were just weeks away from celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary. They are remembered as loving grandparents and pillars of their family. Monica worked as a manager at Albertsons, while Nacho was a skilled carpenter known for his generosity and willingness to help others, including volunteering to assist families after local flooding.
In the wake of the tragedy, the community has rallied around the family. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to assist with funeral expenses, and a fundraiser is scheduled to take place on April 16 at Aztlan Libre in Barrio Logan.
Their deaths have left a lasting impact, not only on their loved ones but on the wider community that knew and cherished them.
