On April 6, 2025, at approximately 5:36 p.m., emergency responders from Miami County EMS, Johnson County Fire District No. 1, and the Miami County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a serious crash on 231st Street, just east of Pflumm Road. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a purple 1998 Ford Ranger in a cattle lot north of the roadway, showing extensive damage. Multiple cattle were found deceased at the scene. The driver, 45-year-old Stephen Anthony Howard of Olathe, Kansas, sustained critical injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Preliminary reports indicate that Howard’s vehicle was traveling westbound on 231st Street when, for reasons currently unknown, it left the roadway, struck a fence, and entered the adjacent cattle field. The truck collided with four cattle before coming to a stop, resulting in the deaths of all four animals. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Homicide Unit (THU), which investigates all serious injury and fatal crashes in the area, responded to the scene to conduct a detailed examination of the incident. Authorities are working to determine the factors that contributed to the vehicle leaving the roadway and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing, and officials continue to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and assess all aspects of the scene to understand the events leading up to the collision. The Miami County Sheriff’s Office has stated that updates will be provided as more information becomes available. This tragic crash highlights the dangers of roadway incidents involving vehicles and livestock, and the community is reminded to exercise caution when traveling near agricultural areas.
