The community of Cleveland, Mississippi is mourning the tragic and untimely death of Jamonte Johnson, a 22-year-old who was killed in a shooting on the night of April 9, 2026.
According to the Cleveland Police Department, officers responded to a shots-fired call around 10:45 p.m. near South Chrisman Avenue and White Street. Upon arrival, they found Johnson suffering from a gunshot wound and unresponsive at the scene.
Emergency responders with Pafford Ambulance Service attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have arrested Chadrick Smith, 22, in connection with the case. He faces charges including murder, tampering with evidence, and discharging a firearm inside city limits. He is currently being held at the Bolivar County Regional Correctional Facility pending court proceedings.
Investigators say the case remains active, with the possibility of additional information or arrests as detectives continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses.
