Johannes Moshemane Mollo, Death, Obituary: Man Killed in Mistaken Identity Attack – Free State
The community in the Free State is mourning the tragic and senseless death of 36-year-old Johannes Moshemane Mollo, who was killed in a brutal case of mistaken identity in Bronville on Sunday morning, April 5, 2026.
According to police, Mollo was walking home with a female companion around 6:30 a.m. when they were approached by a group of suspects. One of the individuals allegedly misidentified him as someone named Sandisile. Despite Mollo’s attempts to correct them and explain that they had the wrong person, the situation quickly escalated.
The suspects reportedly began assaulting both Mollo and the woman. In an effort to protect his companion, Mollo intervened, but during the violent confrontation, he was overpowered and fell to the ground. The attackers then fled the scene on foot.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and found Mollo unresponsive. Authorities confirmed that he had sustained multiple stab wounds to the back and had also been strangled with a sharp object during the attack. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following a police operation conducted on Monday, April 6, five suspects between the ages of 23 and 32 were arrested in connection with the murder. The arrests took place across Welkom, Bronville, and Thabong after officers acted on information provided by a member of the public.
During the operation, police recovered items believed to be linked to the crime, including clothing that has been seized as evidence. A murder case has been officially opened, and investigations are ongoing.
Johannes Moshemane Mollo’s death has left his family, friends, and the wider community in deep shock and grief. He is remembered as a man whose life was taken far too soon in a tragic act of violence that underscores the devastating consequences of mistaken identity.
